FAQ

Why film?

Instead of taking hundreds of shots on a digital camera hoping for the 'perfect shot', film slows you down and forces you to be more present and intentional with every frame. It’s limited, in that you only get 24-36 images per roll. This in itself makes it feel more special, curated and trains your eye to focus on light, emotion and what really matters.

Digital strives for sharpness and perfection, film embraces the raw, honest beauty of real life. The grain, colour, softness, the way it captures light and tone magically - all add layers of depth and character. The little imperfections are what make it unique and beautiful, just like family life. Editing trends come and go, but with film, your memories will remain forever timeless. (Our old family photo albums are proof of that!)

Film is for the nostalgia lovers, the romantics, those who appreciate analog experiences, vintage and authenticity - or those who just have great taste! In a world of rising technology and instant gratification, there is something to be said about waiting. Film is a slowed down, hands on process through and through. The anticipation after sending off film rolls to the lab creates an element of appreciation. And when the film scans finally land in your inbox, it is truly an unmatched feeling to look through the forgotten moments and beautiful unpredictability. (Iykyk!)

What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?

No sweat, this is proof that you're human and honestly how most people feel, myself included. Let's embrace it! Having a camera pointed at you might feel a little unnatural at first, but my goal is to make your session feel like we're just hanging out, in a judgement free, laid-back atmosphere.

We'll incorporate some of the ways you and your family regularly enjoy spending time together. Not only is this a perfect way to tell your story and what that looks like in this moment in time, it helps everyone get more comfortable and into the moment.

Gone are the days of staring into the camera and forcing smiles the entire time. I like to take a step back and capture what unfolds in front of me, but I'll also be there to gently guide if needed. You will be with your loved ones, in your element, so you honestly won't need much from me anyway, I promise. Just remember, what you naturally find yourself doing is always going to be better than anything I could tell you to do.

What should we wear?

I'm a big advocate of choosing things you already have in your closet before buying new. Wearing your most well-loved pieces will have you and your photos feeling natural and true to you.

A good starting point if you're stuck is to think about yourself first and then go from there. Avoid matching everyone and think more coordinating. Pick some solid neutrals, then sprinkle in 2-3 pops of colour. If including pattern, try and stick with one or two simple ones. Colour and texture photograph beautifully on film, but if neutrals are more your thing, think about creating layers with textured fabrics such as knits, linen, denim, corduroy, etc. This adds depth without needing lots of colour.

Consider the location and activity and whether what you’re wearing feels like it belongs in the space we’re creating. Choose something that will allow you to move freely and comfortably when you’re playing around with your little ones.

For the pregnant mama’s – wear whatever feels good! Even if that's wearing your undies and a top that frees the belly, comfort is key.

These are all just helpful tips, not strict rules - You should absolutely bring your own style into it and wear whatever makes you feel most like yourself! Because at the end of the day, if your family is forced to wear something they don't like, it may come across in the photos. Have fun with it, let your partner wear their favourite shirt, let your kid pick something that makes them happy and shows off their personality.

If you need suggestions, I'm always here to help!

What if my home isn't exactly 'aesthetic'?

It certainly doesn't need to be! I will focus on the areas in your home that has the best natural light, 1-2 rooms can be more than enough. Life isn't perfect, and I don't expect your home to be. It's okay for your house to look like kids live there. This all adds to your unique story. Once they start to grow, you'll miss seeing how they used to play and the beautiful chaotic mess of childhood.

We can also take things outside and play in the yard or go for a walk around the neighbourhood. Magic can be made anywhere, and at-home sessions aren't about what your home looks like. They're about all the joy, laughter and memories that are made within it. Your home may go through changes and this season of life will pass - let's embrace the imperfections and what that looks like now.

What if my kids don't behave or my child gets upset?

These sessions aren't about posing or trying to keep the kids still and smile at the camera the whole time. Instead, I encourage you to lean into their energy, let go of roles and expectations - and have fun! We'll let them lead the way. If things go wrong, the best thing we can all do is laugh it off and let it go. I can still make something magical out of anything if parents can do this with me. If something’s not working or the kids aren’t into it, I don’t push it. We'll move on to a different spot, activity, or take a little break altogether.

The more movement and interaction together the better. If we want some calmness, bring out a snack or special treat to enjoy, give them a cuddle or piggyback, blow bubbles together, read a book, etc. This will take the pressure off, help everyone get back into the moment and make for beautiful candid memories to document.

What if the weather is bad?

If shooting indoors and it's a dark, gloomy day, I would suggest to reschedule as I rely on the natural light that fills your home.

If shooting outdoors and it's a rainy day, we can reschedule. If it's just a bit overcast, we can totally embrace it, or I will give you the option to reschedule. These are your photos and we don't have to rush anything.

I always check the forecast ahead of time to give you a heads up about potential need for rescheduling.
